Questions

You’ve probably got some questions. If you do not find the answer, do not hesitate to contact us.

What do I wear?

If you don’t have a gi (karate uniform) then just come along in some loose fitting, comfortable clothing such as a t-shirt, shorts or jogging bottoms. We always train bare foot so no socks/footwear is needed.

What’s age range do you teach?

We have no age limit. You are never too old to start karate and as long as you try your best, you won’t be expected to go beyond what your body can do, but we will still push you a little!

There is a minimum age of 12 years old. The reason being is because small children have difficulty staying focused for the duration of the training. We may be able to flex this a little if other family members are also training.

Can I bring my grade from another club?

That is a big maybe. If you are coming from another JKA club then yes. If you are coming from a different Shotokan organisation as JKS, ISKF, SKIF then yes but you will be required to have your current grade reaffirmed at a JKA/AF grading. If you have previously trained in another style of karate then you will have to start over.

How do I get karate gi (uniform)?

We can sell them directly to you. We both have beginner Gi’s and more advanced versions. You can also if you want order them online do that. Feel free to ask before you order anything so you won’t buy the wrong kind.

Could I get hurt?

We hope not but accidents do happen from time to time, but never anything serious. Karate is a physical activity which involves kicking, punching, jumping which is all new to you in the beginning and your body and mind will have to adapt to this. You will pick up some bruises although mainly from blocking rather than being hit!

We always start training with a full warm up and we will make sure that you train within your limits. You may see higher grades doing things to each other that looks intimidating but you won’t be expected to perform at their level until we feel you are ready.

I have trained karate prior and would like to train again, would this be okay?

Yes absolutely everyone is welcome no matter of your experience.

How fast can I get a black belt?

If this is your goal then you’ve come to the wrong karate club. Becoming a black belt (1st Dan) means you have a good understanding of the basics of Karate and that you’re ready for the real training to begin. It is not the end, it is where it starts to get interesting!

But, to answer the question since you dying to know, well the answer is if you train 3 times a week and work hard then you should have a black belt in 3 – 4 years time. Once you’ve earned it you can start working towards your 2nd Dan. That takes a minimum of two year then your 3rd Dan a minimum of 3 years and so on.

What kind of a shape do I need to be in?

To train Karate requires a good fitness but if you’re just starting out or returning after a while you will find out the more you train the easier it will be. We will not leave you in the dust, but again we will not go easy on you either. We are here to make you stronger in every way

Good to know before training?

Always bring a water so you can stay hydrated during training. We do recommend you get plenty of fluid before coming to training.
